Established clubs now face a denser calendar and more competitive fixtures. The opening round therefore became a test of squad depth. Everton failed that test in worrying fashion. Everton began with a squad rated highly on paper, but reality was different. They created 14 chances against Crystal Palace but managed only two shots on target. Set pieces rarely threatened. The result was a surprising defeat, and for new full-time manager Scott Phelan it was a wake-up call. Football can control possession, but if you cannot control the penalty area, statistics are only a shell. Watching Everton, I noticed the problem was risk aversion: they made an extra pass instead of shooting, chose the safe option instead of attacking space. Compared with their slow start last season, Liverpool already look improved in their structure. One win against a promoted side proves nothing, but it creates a foundation of confidence. Opening rounds always tempt people into quick conclusions. Manchester United lost 1-2 to London City Lionesses, and talk of crisis immediately followed. Look closer: that defeat resembled Everton’s stumble. It did not come from a lack of player quality, but from a mismatch between how the team reacted to specific situations. Data analysts can point to chances created or possession percentages, but those numbers do not explain why strikers avoided shooting. Football’s language lives in rhythm and confidence in each touch, and those do not show up on a statistics sheet. Moreover, Crystal Palace’s victory over Everton may still be challenged over an alleged breach of substitution rules. If the protest is upheld, the early table could change. This shows that an expanded league also comes with tighter regulations, and clubs must be careful off the pitch as much as on it. There is a phrase I often think when leaving a stadium: people do not remember the score, they remember how a pair of boots left its mark on the grass. The opening WSL round is just the first mark on a very long pitch. Everton must respond against Charlton and West Ham. Arsenal must answer by integrating their new signings into the team’s rhythm. Liverpool are entitled to dream of a safer position, but that dream will only last if they reproduce this performance against stronger opponents. The season does not end after one matchday; it is only beginning to show its cracks.
