Table Tennis England webinar on September 29, 2026 explains DBS changes for supervised roles

From September 1, 2026, table tennis volunteers in England must prepare for a major DBS change. The Crime and Policing Act 2026 removes the supervision exemption from the legal definition of Regulated Activity. Previously, a coach or volunteer working with children under supervision might not need a DBS check. From now on, supervised roles and unsupervised roles are treated in the same way if they fall within regulated activity. The change affects clubs, league organisers and volunteers. Table Tennis England has arranged an online webinar to explain the details. The webinar takes place on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm UK time. It is led by Kyhl Daly, Table Tennis England’s Designated Safeguarding Officer. The event is aimed at Club Welfare Officers, club or league committee members and volunteers who regularly work with children. According to Table Tennis England, the webinar will cover three main areas: how the legal change affects individuals and volunteers, how Table Tennis England runs its DBS process, and why DBS checks are important for safeguarding children in table tennis. The core change is simple: from September 1, 2026, the supervision exemption no longer exists in the legal definition of Regulated Activity. A person who used to avoid a DBS check because they were supervised no longer has that legal reason to be exempt. It would be wrong to assume that every volunteer now needs a DBS check. DBS checks still depend on the definition of regulated activity, including regular or responsible work with children. The new rule removes one layer of exemption; it does not turn every adult around a table tennis venue into a DBS applicant. Clubs should assess roles carefully. For Club Welfare Officers, this is a key moment to review staff and volunteer lists, update role descriptions and identify anyone who regularly works with children. The webinar is intended to help clubs understand the new boundary of legal responsibility.
