DIY Glass Jar Lanterns || Dollar Store Craft

I can't give credit to myself for this idea.  Jamie, who writes the blog Anderson + Grant, posted the tutorial on Craftberry Bush.  Both are blogs I follow and love.

This project was inexpensive and quick.  I got all the supplies from the dollar store.

Three jars - $3
Two packs of 2 LED lights - $2
One package of rocks - $1
Hot Glue Gun - Already had
Twine - Already Had
Total for 3 lanterns = $6 or $2 each.

While I didn't invent the idea, I can certainly show you some ideas for how I'm displaying these cute jars around my house.

You can vary the size and amount of twine you use.  You don't have to use rocks and LED candles - fill with colored sea glass, seashells, or other trinkets you want to display.  Other ideas include filling them with succulents, using real candles, hanging them from your porch, putting them outside your front door, on your night table, any end table, next to your kitchen sink, basically anywhere you can think of.

Going on a picnic?  Take a few of these.  Having a BBQ?  Put a few of these around your grill.  Having some friends over?  Scatter some large and small lanterns, with real candles, around your house for a relaxing vibe.

My husband loves how these turned out and wants me to make many more to put around the house.

Thoughts 'n' Things - DO YOU DIY?

THOUGHTS
DIY is the big trend right now.  Do It Yourself.  Save money.  But is it worth it?  Here's what I ask myself before starting a DIY project:

1.  How much do each of the materials required cost?

2.  How many items can you make with each set of materials?

3.  How much time will it take to make?

If the materials themselves are more expensive than just buying the product already made, then it's not worth it to DIY.  If the ingredients are super cheap but it's going to take hours and hours of precious time, then it might not be worth it.

HOWEVER, if it's something you LOVE doing and it's a product that you will love and cherish forever, then investing some time and money into it might not be a bad idea.

I often find myself wanting to try a DIY project but never getting around to it.  These days I can't afford to purchase any crafting items I may not already have, and I don't have a bunch on hand.

THINGS
Here are a few CHEAP INEXPENSIVE DIY projects that I want to give a try as soon as Peter and I are settled in our new place (who knows when that will be!!!):

Stamp Ideas

Ok this is a random story, but when I was a little kid I wanted to be a stamp designer.  I'm not talking about the kind you put on letters.  I'm talking about rubber and ink stamps!  I still love to go into stationery stores and browse the stamps!

Someday I'm going to buy a stamp-making kit.  They are affordable and look easy enough to use! (This would be a good Christmas gift, hint hint...)

Over the past few weeks I've been sketching stamp ideas in my art journal.  Here are few that I like the best...

Leaf

My future initials

Monogram idea (casual)

Some soon-to-be sketched ideas are:
- Return address
- Flowers
- Geometric shapes
- More monogram ideas
- Future last name (The Arthurs)

What are your favorite stamp designs?

Crafty Correspondence

This is a letter I sent to my friend from APU, Erin.  I made the envelope out of a map of Chicago that I've been saving since March of 2011... I hope she liked it!

I encourage you that next time you send a letter, make it a crafty one! :)

Julie

Book box - tutorial

I've seen this project on various sites so I thought I'd try my hand at it...

In a nutshell:
1.  Take a pretty book   2.  Glue pages together   3.  Cut a hole on the inside   4.  Use it to hold jewelry or flowers, hide valuables, etc.

Find a pretty book (Poems of Emily Dickinson).
